A kid who considers himself an epic fail discovers the transformative power of love when he deals with adoption in this novel from Cynthia Kadohata, winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Eleven-year-old Jaden is adopted, and he knows he’s an "epic fail". That’s why his family is traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt a new baby - to replace him, he’s sure. And he gets it. He is incapable of stopping his stealing, hoarding, lighting fires, aggressive running, and obsession with electricity. He knows his parents love him, but he feels...nothing. But when they get to Kazakhstan, it turns out the infant they’ve travelled for has already been adopted, and literally within minutes are faced with having to choose from six other babies. While his parents agonize, Jaden is more interested in the toddlers. One, a little guy named Dimash, spies Jaden and barrels over to him every time he sees him. Jaden finds himself increasingly intrigued by and worried about Dimash. Already three years old and barely able to speak, Dimash will soon age out of the orphanage, and then his life will be as hopeless as Jaden feels now. For the first time in his life, Jaden actually feels something that isn’t pure blinding fury, and there’s no way to control it, or its power. From camels rooting through garbage like raccoons, to eagles being trained like hunting dogs, to streets that are more pothole than pavement, Half a World Away is Cynthia Kadohata’s latest spark of a novel. 1. Jake Needham is Asia’s most stylish and atmospheric writer of crime fiction.” (The Singapore Straits Times)“Needham writes so you can smell the spicy street food mingling with the traffic jams, the sweat, and the garbage.” (Libris Reviews)The first bomb cracked the Hilton like an egg. The second gutted the lobby of the Marriott. And the third peeled the front off of the Grand Hyatt. Three massive explosions, all at American hotels in the heart of the city, and all within a few horrifying seconds. Hundreds are dead and thousands are injured. Singapore is bleeding.Inspector Samuel Tay is a senior inspector in the Special Investigation Section of Singapore CID, but he is frozen out of the investigation from the beginning. He has some serious enemies in Singapore’s Internal Security Department and he has even more enemies at the American embassy, so Tay is assigned routine cases while his colleagues join with the CIA and the FBI in a feverish search for the bombers.Three days after the explosions, the smell of death still sticky in the city’s air, Tay is sent to a run-down apartment near the Malaysian border where two children have found the body of a Caucasian male with a broken neck. Tay feels an immediate connection with the dead man, although he doesn’t think he has seen him before. As Tay searches the dead man’s past for clues to who he was and who his killer might have been, Tay’s own past begins to give up its secrets. A long-dead father he can barely remember reaches out of the grave to point to the truth about both the murdered man and the bombings. And the horror of Singapore’s destruction becomes a personal horror for Samuel Tay. Although a novel of fiction, it is based upon real incidents that occurred during that time period. Actual locales in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island are utilized. The audiobook contains love, death, passion, violence, and is interspersed throughout with history of the time period. It centers around two main characters who work together in the 120th police precinct. The prominent character is Lieutenant A. and his driver Charlie. During their times together, Lt. A goes back into his past and describes for Charlie some of the most horrific incidents that he had encountered when he was a young officer during the 1960s and 1970s. Charlie begins to have a horrid affair with a woman he meets while on patrol and eventually falls in love with her. He is married and, eventually, his wife finds out. Charlie begins to feel torn between his wife and his girlfriend and confides in Lt. A with his problem. He begins to rely on Lt. A to help him with his problem. The stories that Lt. A recounts for him help take Charlie's mind off his pressing problems with his ongoing affair. The pressure of the affair begins to have a negative effect on Charlie, especially after his wife finds out and, she too, begins an affair in the office where she works. Charlie finally realizes that he does not want to lose his wife and finally confesses everything to Lt. A, who comes up with a solution that just might help Charlie with his problem. Merritt, with just a dash of H. P. Lovecraft. Arthur Leo Zagat graduated from Fordham University Law School in what ended up being a very bad year - 1929. Thanks to the stock market crash and the resulting depression, he, like his contemporary Erle Stanley Garner, never practiced law. Instead, Zagat teamed up with another struggling young attorney, Nate Schachner, collaborating on a raft of science fiction and fantasy yarns for Wonder Stories and similar pulps. Striking off on his own, Zagat soon established himself as a versatile writer. His skills and reputation grew, and by the mid-1930s, he cracked the top pulp magazine, Argosy, producing a string of serialized fantasy novels that were nothing like anything Zagat had ever penned previously. Drink We Deep was the first of these. It ran in six parts, beginning with the July 31, 1937 Argosy. It's the eerie account of brave archeologist and paleontologist Hugh Lambert, and the weirdness he discovered in pastoral upstate New York. We don't want to give away any story secrets, so we'll just quote the blurb adorning Drink We Deep's Fantastic Novels reappearance: Beneath the timeless rocks of the Heiderbergs - slumbering below Lake Wankooka's unfathomed waters - lies the seed of Earth conflict. For there lives the strange and troubled race of other worldlings, waiting, always waiting, for the hour of deliverance.... And on the Earth's surface, one man feels in his blood an irresistible summons that calls him to their side... We know little about the inspiration for this fearful fantasy. Except this: "My daughter's summer camp gave me the setting and the inspiration for Drink We Deep," Zagat once revealed. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Marvel. Content Based Image Retrieval

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR), also known as query by image content (QBIC) and content-based visual information retrieval (CBVIR) is the application of computer vision techniques to the image retrieval problem, that is, the problem of searching for digital images in large databases. "Content-based" means that the search will analyze the actual contents of the image rather than the metadata such as keywords, tags, and/or descriptions associated with the image. The term 'content' in this context might refer to colors, shapes, textures, or any other information that can be derived from the image itself. CBIR is desirable because most web based image search engines rely purely on metadata and this produces a lot of garbage in the results. Also having humans manually enter keywords for images in a large database can be inefficient, expensive and may not capture every keyword that describes the image. This book discusses the novel idea of sectorization of the planes conceptualized out of the transformed images for feature extraction. The new idea of wavelet generation from the basic mathematical transforms has been used for the feature extraction as well.

Described as 'a landmark, not in the West Indian, but in the contemporary novel' by C.L.R. James, Earl Lovelace's Caribbean classic tells the story of Calvary Hill - poverty stricken, pot-holed and garbage-strewn - where the slum shacks 'leap out of the red dirt and stone, thin like smoke, fragile like kite paper, balancing on their rickety pillars as broomsticks on the edge of a juggler's nose'. The Dragon Can't Dance is a remarkable canvas of shanty-town life in which Lovelace's intimate knowledge of rural Trinidad and the Carnival as a sustaining cultural tradition are brilliantly brought to life.

A kid who considers himself an epic fail discovers the transformative power of love when he deals with adoption in this novel from Cynthia Kadohata, winner of the Newbery Medal (Kira-Kira) and the National Book Award (The Thing About Luck). Eleven-year-old Jaden is adopted, and he knows he's an 'epic fail.” That's why his family is traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt a new baby—to replace him, he's sure. And he gets it. He is incapable of stopping his stealing, hoarding, lighting fires, aggressive running, and obsession with electricity. He knows his parents love him, but he feels...nothing. When they get to Kazakhstan, it turns out the infant they've traveled for has already been adopted, and literally within minutes are faced with having to choose from six other babies. For the first time in his life, Jaden actually feels something that isn't pure blinding fury, and there's no way to control it, or its power. From camels rooting through garbage like raccoons, to eagles being trained like hunting dogs, to streets that are more pothole than pavement, the vivid depictions in Half a World Away create 'an inspiring story that celebrates hope and second chances” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
