The term garbage is defined to mean refuse, waste materials, rubbish, trash, residues, useless, debris, hazardous, ashes, unwanted or undesired materials or solid wastes. This work examines rhetoric that uses garbage and waste as a metaphor for people. This rhetoric took its modern form during the Industrial Revolution when urban reformers, religious leaders and other members of the middle classes garbagized the urban poor and working classes as a strategy of identity construction and social control. The American cultural revolutions of the 1960s and 70s brought challenges to this rhetoric. With heightened awareness about the environment as well as social injustice, people began to look at garbage as a source of insight into culture. Many North American novels published 1955-1995 use garbage as a central image and metaphor. Six novels published after 1970, Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Laurence's The Diviners, Silko's Ceremony, Robinson's Housekeeping, Smiley's A Thousand Acres, Allison's Bastard out of Carolina, all include characters that are clear about how garbagization works as a dominant narrative in society. The characters write counter-narratives by which they not only escape garbagization but narrate an entirely other way of being.

Garbage Collection in Distributed Memory Systems

Garbage Collection (GC) is a critical memory management process in programming languages based on dynamic object creation and automatic reclamation of storage. The problem of the GC for uni-processor systems has been well understood with many efficient solutions proposed and used. GC algorithms have been also proposed and used for shared memory systems. However, few GC algorithms have been proposed for distributed memory system. In this thesis, a new GC algorithm for distributed memory system, called Mark and Copy Garbage Collection (M&CGC) is proposed. The algorithm is based on parallel copying GC algorithm combining with some aspects of Mark & Sweep GC and Copying GC algorithms. M&CGC has been implemented and evaluated using an underlying architecture with different network topology (linear, ring and mesh). The performance of our algorithm is compared with the Mark and Sweep Garbage Collection (M&SGC) which proposed by McCarthy but in distributed environment. Analysis of evaluation results shows that our algorithm always out-performs the M&SGC algorithm with respect to total execution time.

This research shows the changes of a landscape in the presence of waste, reality that invades the territory in many different ways in time and space. At first the issue of garbage is faced according to the language of creativity and secondly on how the inevitable accumulation of garbage designs our new and unexpected astonishing landscapes. Then, through a list of projects for more or less controlled recovery altered areas, how the present territorial dimension is inexorably besieged by garbage is explained. With a knowing eye the time before research is here: to the critical, strategic and objective evaluation to report through a cartographic survey the present conditions and the effective distribution of plants for waste disposal on the italian territory. We then single out a territorial section touched by the phenomena: the area between Milano and Brescia and the territorial morphology so altered and the inevitable environmental transformations. Lastly, through a careful study of the present territorial status, conceptual models take form of possible and potential, present and future, scenarios of altered areas of the presence of waste and collection plants.
