Most countries in the world experience challenges in proper and effective solid waste management. These challenges range from reducing generation of solid waste change of consumption habits, separation of the wastes, collection, treatment, transport, recycle, reuse and proper disposal of the solid waste. Despite of the multiplicity of activities undertaken by county government of Nairobi in SWM, the results are doubtful since the city is garbage littered. Therefore the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of SWM processes in Nairobi County. As established by the findings, the county government needs to focus on people centered/in-ward-looking formulation of environmental policies as well as their implementation since the out-ward looking/top down approach development policies have caused more harm than good to both the Kenyan environment and its citizens. There is need to develop a well coordinated public-private partnerships with an active oversights and control of wastes from the point of generation to the point of final disposal, so as to minimize the costs associated with clean-up of the estates over a long period of time.
The term garbage is defined to mean refuse, waste materials, rubbish, trash, residues, useless, debris, hazardous, ashes, unwanted or undesired materials or solid wastes. The word is also used to mean disposable or non-disposable solid or semi solid, combustible or non-combustible materials that result from human and animal activities. Thus, solid wastes can be degradable or non - degradable. Each household generates garbage or waste day in and day out. Items and materials that we no longer need or do not have any further use for and with fall in the category of solid wastes or garbage. Very often we tend to throw them away haphazardly because they are no longer useful. These items are called solid wastes. These materials include paper, wood, clothes, metals, glass, chemicals, biomass sludge, slag heaps, paints and sand. Garbage is no longer just an environmental polluter but a financial asset. At the household-level proper segregation of waste has to be done and it should be ensured that all organic matter is kept aside for composting. These materials can be recycled and re - used and thus, they are economically viable. They can make a difference for millions in the third world.
This study examines the patterns and determinants of solid waste disposal practices adopted by various households in Dar es Salaam city, Tanzania, using household budget survey data. The study uses a Multinomial Logit (MNL) model to examine the underlying determinants of choosing ways to dispose garbage, i.e., rubbish pit inside compound, rubbish pit outside compound, rubbish bin, thrown outside and other. The descriptive results reveal that about 35% of the respondents used rubbish bin, and approximately 24% were using throwing out option. This is against the use of rubbish pit outside compound, rubbish pit inside compound and other. Estimation results of a MNL suggest that household choices of these practices are determined by a certain combination of factors such as age, education and occupation of the household head, distance to the main road, home ownership, proportions of females and family members above 45 years, expenditure per adult equivalent and municipality location. This study provides useful insights into sustainable Solid Waste Management practices in Dar es Salaam city.
The study explores the Zabaleen s contested geography and spatial strategies in relation to their right to inner city areas and future relocation to Cairo s suburban new settlements . Over the decades, the Zabaleen waste (garbage) collectors of Cairo, have created what is arguably one of the world s most efficient and sustainable resource-recovery and waste-recycling systems. Yet the continuation of this intricate relationship between community, environment and livelihood is jeopardised by the official privatisation of solid waste services through contracts with technology-intensive multinational corporations which threatens the sustainability of the garbage collectors communities. This situation was aggravated by recent official measures during the swine flu pandemic, which were mainly directed towards the Zabaleen s pigs rearing and waste recycling economy. In addition the authorities plan to move the Zabaleen activities further out of the city, claiming that this will turn their neighbourhoods into cleaner living environments.
