This book takes a humorous slant on the programming practice manual by reversing the usual approach: under the pretence of teaching you how to become the world's worst programmer who generally causes chaos, the book teaches you how to avoid the kind of bad habits that introduce bugs or cause code contributions to be rejected. Why be a code monkey when you can be a chaos monkey? OK, so you want to become a terrible programmer. You want to write code that gets vigorously rejected in review. You look forward to reading feedback plastered in comments like "WTF???". Even better, you fantasize about your bug-ridden changes sneaking through and causing untold chaos in the codebase. You want to build a reputation as someone who writes creaky, messy, error-prone garbage that frustrates your colleagues. Bad Programming Practices 101 will help you achieve that goal a whole lot quicker by teaching you an array of bad habits that will allow you to cause maximum chaos. Alternatively, you could use this book to identify those bad habits and learn to avoid them. The bad practices are organized into topics that form the basis of programming (layout, variables, loops, modules, and so on). It's been remarked that to become a good programmer, you must first write 10,000 lines of bad code to get it all out of your system. This book is aimed at programmers who have so far written only a small portion of that. By learning about poor programming habits, you will learn good practices. In addition, you will find out the motivation behind each practice, so you can learn why it is considered good and not simply get a list of rules. What You'll Learn Become a better coder by learning how (not) to programChoose your tools wiselyThink of programming as problem solvingDiscover the consequences of a program's appearance and overall structureExplain poor use of variables in programsAvoid bad habits and common mistakes when using conditionals and loopsSee how poor error-handling makes for unstable programsSidestep bad practices related specifically to object-oriented programmingMitigate the effects of ineffectual and inadequate bug location and testing Who This Book Is For Those who have some practical programming knowledge (can program in at least one programming language), but little or no professional experience, which they would like to quickly build up. They are either still undergoing training in software development, or are at the beginning of their programming career. They have at most 1-2 years of professional experience.
This study examines the patterns and determinants of solid waste disposal practices adopted by various households in Dar es Salaam city, Tanzania, using household budget survey data. The study uses a Multinomial Logit (MNL) model to examine the underlying determinants of choosing ways to dispose garbage, i.e., rubbish pit inside compound, rubbish pit outside compound, rubbish bin, thrown outside and other. The descriptive results reveal that about 35% of the respondents used rubbish bin, and approximately 24% were using throwing out option. This is against the use of rubbish pit outside compound, rubbish pit inside compound and other. Estimation results of a MNL suggest that household choices of these practices are determined by a certain combination of factors such as age, education and occupation of the household head, distance to the main road, home ownership, proportions of females and family members above 45 years, expenditure per adult equivalent and municipality location. This study provides useful insights into sustainable Solid Waste Management practices in Dar es Salaam city.
For decades, the issue of environmental preservation has been on the top of the agenda of global concerns. Despite the environmental attention in the 1970s, it has been only in the late 1980s that the idea of green marketing has emerged. Although India aspires to become an Asian country with worldwide importance, its environmental quality lags far behind to some of the Asian countries. India too suffers from dangerously high levels of air pollution, poor water quality, and high levels of exposure to severe traffic noise, high levels of the garbage disposal and rapidly diminishing landfill space. There is a growing concern regarding the preservation of the environment. Many people now realize the issues of environmental protection. Since the government and public are more responsive to environmental aspects while consuming products, businesses have also felt the necessity to display green behavior. As a result, more and more marketers are coming out with products that are 'green' or 'environment-friendly'. Considering the remarkable growth rate of green product markets, companies perceive tremendous market opportunities in the development of green products for the Indian market.
This work examines rhetoric that uses garbage and waste as a metaphor for people. This rhetoric took its modern form during the Industrial Revolution when urban reformers, religious leaders and other members of the middle classes garbagized the urban poor and working classes as a strategy of identity construction and social control. The American cultural revolutions of the 1960s and 70s brought challenges to this rhetoric. With heightened awareness about the environment as well as social injustice, people began to look at garbage as a source of insight into culture. Many North American novels published 1955-1995 use garbage as a central image and metaphor. Six novels published after 1970, Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Laurence's The Diviners, Silko's Ceremony, Robinson's Housekeeping, Smiley's A Thousand Acres, Allison's Bastard out of Carolina, all include characters that are clear about how garbagization works as a dominant narrative in society. The characters write counter-narratives by which they not only escape garbagization but narrate an entirely other way of being.
